A common myth is that cosmetology is a career strictly for those who “don’t want a real job”. We can’t think of anything more untrue. Cosmetology definitely is a career, and it can be a career for you if you’re willing to put in the work!

All the Careers You Could Pursue

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to “just do hair” as a cosmetologist. There are a variety of careers that you could pursue depending on your interests and the state that you plan to practice in. In Nebraska you could find work as a:

  • Nail Technician
  • Funeral Cosmetologist
  • Salon Manager
  • Salon Owner
  • Esthetician
  • Hair Stylist
  • Makeup Artist

While these aren’t the only jobs you could potentially have, these are a few of the jobs that you may or may not have known cosmetologists can have!

Famous Cosmetologists

There are plenty of people who thrive as cosmetologists all around the world, but some of them really make it big. Here are a few names you may have heard at the salon.

  • Vidal Sassoon: Sassoon was an innovator and leader in the beauty industry. He developed his own styles, product, and even world-renowned hair stylists like Paul Mitchell.
  • Olive Benson: Benson is considered the leader in hair relaxing and straightening and was a well-known hair designer.
  • Paul Mitchell: Mitchell was a well-known student of Sassoon who went on to start his own product lines and hair design innovations.
  • Horst Rechelbacher: Rechelbacher is the founder of Aveda and a caring philanthropist.

Cosmetology in the Future

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the job outlook for Barbers, Hairstylists, and Cosmetologists is growing at a rate of 10% between 2016-2026. With the ever-growing population, customer service jobs will continue to increase. Highly perfected skills will be necessary to compete in the job market because everyone loves to treat themselves!
Good news: robots won’t take over the jobs of hair stylists. At least, that’s what Glassdoor predicts. Because hairstyling requires a creative touch and personal interaction, the cold hands of a robot just won’t do.
